I know that it is probably not a good idea to talk about olive irrigation management in orchards now, but water management is critical for tree uniformity and sustained high yields of superior quality. Mature orchards require substantial shoot growth to replace old fruitwood and maintain high yields. Shoot growth is of major importance to young, developing orchards as early production depends on tree size.

Various studies indicate that due to a lack of water resources of infrastructure development, most of the world’s olives are grown under dry land conditions. When irrigation is practiced, applied water is far less than potential water use (ETc) of the trees. It is clear that the olive tree is drought tolerant, able to survive under severe water stress, and still produce a crop. However, top quality yields coming from high quality fruit at Rhizoma Olive Farms require supplemental irrigation. The lack of adequate soil water results in plant deficits, that is referred to as water stress. As leaf stomata, the small openings on the underside of olive leaves, open early in the morning in response to sunlight, water vapour moves from the interior of the leaf through the stomata and into the atmosphere. Additionally, leaf stomata are not only the conduits for transpiration but also for carbon assimilation. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the atmosphere through the stomata to the leaf where photosynthesis converts it into sugars, the building blocks necessary for plant and fruit and the fuel that powers plant processes. Empirical data alongside with published papers suggest that reducing carbon uptake and thus photosynthesis will negatively affect one or more plant organs like roots, shoots, branches, leaves, fruit etc. Irrigation at Rhizoma Olive Farms is provided via drip emitters which seem to provide the most efficient result for the climate of Argolida.

July and August are typically the months when olives need the most water. Insufficient soil moisture during these months reduces shoot growth and carbohydrate production and if severe enough, causes fruit shrivel. Scientific water management pays off, ecologically, politically and financially. We evaluate practices existing and implement improved methods to assess water use, soil moisture content and application uniformity. Applying principles related to water allocations to agriculture in our area made Rhizoma Olive Farms significantly improve our farms quality and productivity. Although olive trees are considered drought tolerant plants they do not produce well without proper irrigation. This is mainly due to the fact that nutrient absorption rates decrease substantially. Sound agronomic principles are implemented in Rhizoma Olive Farms in order to increase soil moisture and help trees keep moisture within desired levels. Common sense is always used to modify irrigation scheduling if temperature or wind conditions are quite different from normal. The Greek Meteorological Society and meteo.gr are very helpful in letting us know the difference.

The research on the specific water requirements for olive is relatively recent, possibly because much of the world’s acreage is not irrigated. Where irrigation is practiced, the water supply is so limited in most areas that only a small fraction of the potential orchard need is met. In Kranidi, where irrigation is relatively plentiful and inexpensive, water is an increasing priority for olive growers, especially if they want to plant more trees in their orchard. July and August are typically the months when olives need the most water. Insufficient soil moisture during these months reduces shoot growth and carbohydrate production and if severe enough causes fruit shrivel during processing. It needs to be stressed however that too much water can be as detrimental as too little water. Another less obvious effect of poor water management is a reduction in nitrogen (N) assimilation. In Rhizoma Olive Farms we try to improve our orchard’s productivity without compromising the quality of our oil by following a more scientific irrigation scheduling based on sound agronomic principles.
