Due to a lack of infrastructure development, most of the world’s olive are grown under dry land conditions. When irrigation is practiced, applied water is often far less than potential water stress, and still produce a valuable crop. However, numerous studies have shown that top yields of high-quality fruit require supplemental irrigation. Many olive oil producers in Kranidi are able to fully irrigate their orchards due to relatively abundant water resources which is progressively depleted. This year the amount of rain that fell on our area was relatively higher compared to previous years. But the increased competition for the area’s water supply from a growing population and the environmental sector suggests that olive oil producers will be increasingly accountable for the water use.
